College moving Checklist
A Moving Checklist to Help when Moving Away to College
Chances are that ever since you received your college acceptance letter, you have been planning and preparing for moving away to college. Make sure to find some time to organize yourself in all of the excitement so you can be sure that everything that needs to be done is taken care of!
Your Moving Checklist
Two Months Before
• Prepare a binder that can be used for everything related to your move to college. Use manila folders inside the binder to separate areas for receipts, copies of bills of lading that may be used with moving companies, and so forth.
• Find a moving company you love and book them. This needs to be done well in advance so that there are vehicles available when you want to go. Any other moving arrangements such as how and where to load/unload, should also be taken care of now as well.
• Look into self-storage areas if you will need one and also reserve this now as well. Types of self storage facilities are: indoor storage with-in a building and outdoor storage.
• Start preparing the list of everyone that needs your new address. Like your water bill, heating bills or insurance.
Then begin sending out “Change of Address” forms to the post office near you.
• Change your personal information with banks, credit card companies, and anyone else that may need it.
• Pack small items such as knick knacks that you don’t need.
• Start finding boxes and other materials you will need for packing and moving.
• Start collecting important documents such as school registration, personal and student identification, and so forth, in one secure place.
Two Weeks Before
• If you will be responsible for canceling the phone service at your current home and arranging for a hookup at your new home, now is the time to do that.
• Now is the time to start seriously packing! Keep out enough clothes for one week and figure in a wash cycle in between. The rest of your clothes should be getting packed and stored away. Anything else that you don’t use on a regular basis can also be packed now.
• Tie up loose ends at home. If you have any rentals out or anything that needs to be “run out”, do it now as the madness starts after this week!
• Pack anything that you want to have handy for the move, as well as your personal information file, into a box and mark on the outside of it, “DO NOT MOVE.” This will keep it safe from the moving company or friends that are helping you move.
• If you plan on driving your car to school, take it in now for a complete check before taking it out on the road.
One Week Before
• Call everyone involved in actual moving day and confirm all of the details with them.
• Start making sure that everything is packed and ready to go.
• Take apart any furniture that you will be taking with you.
The Day Before
• Any paperwork that will be needed during the move or as soon as you get onto campus should be placed in a safe place.
• Your computer hardware, and any other related equipment can be shut down and disassembled. It’s wise to write down the serial numbers in your moving binder so that you have them should something happen during the move.
• Pack a separate container with items you will want first upon arriving at your dorm or new apartment. This includes things such as coffee and related supplies, toilet paper, pens, paper, etc.
